CHALLENGE #13: Bright Lights with Kim

CHALLENGE #13: Bright Lights with Kim

Postby KJ-Starre » Sun Oct 28, 2012 12:16 pm

Earlier this year we had a carnival come to town. Max was so excited to go seeing as it was his first. What made more 'spectacular' for him, was that we went at dusk meaning as the evening progressed it got dark & they switched all the carnival lights on. In his mind it was heavenly, so though I'd use that as inspiration for my technique challenge.

For this 'Bright Lights' technique challenge you'll need to grab a brayer (we have a great one for sale in the store too see here: http://www.cocoadaisy.com/store/inkssen ... -1248.html) and x2 different shades of yellow ink pads.

Image

I am going to show you how easy it is.

Step#1:
Image
Load your brayer generously with your first yellow shade.

Step#2:
Image
It should look like this. Now grab a piece of white cardstock.

Step#3:
Image
Allow enough room at the top of the page to fit your brayer in. You are going to firmly & quickly 'bounce' your brayer in a circle on the page, rolling slightly.

Step#4:
Image
Turn your paper as you work until you have a circle star-burst shape.

Step#5:
Image
Load your brayer with the next yellow shade.

Step#6:
Image
Press & lightly roll the brayer in a sun-burst shape as before. Placing the new yellow color in the 'gaps'. You are in essence giving your star-burst some 'life'.

Step#7:
Image
The result is a cool background paper ready for scrapping. Simple right?

Here are some ideas you could try:
1) Blues & greens
2) Red & orange
3) Rainbow of colors
4) Yellow and blue that will give you green where the colors cross.
the possibilities are endless.

My challenge is: Use a brayered sunburst image on a page in some manner or form.

This is my page idea after using the brayer technique.

Very cool layout and challenge, Kim! I don't have a brayer, but I'm thinking I could make something that will work! LOL

I don't have a brayer either, so Crystal share with us what you come up with.
I justed remembered that I have one of those foam roll brushes. That might work?

Yes... a small foam roll brush might do the trick Amber. Although you might have to adjust how much ink you load onto it. Remember it'll be super absorbent.

Why wouldn't a roll of tape work the same way? like masking tape or something...roll it in there and roll it on the paper? LOL Maybe I don't know what a brayer is.

Crystal a brayer is a high density roller for arty ink treatments. They are so much fun once you have mastered a few techniques.

Wow - that page is awesome. Love that the starburst peeks out and gives the feel of the ferris wheel. Awesome challenge. I have been wanting to purchase a brayer for ages and never have!!!

Okay, so I didn't do the yellows...I went with a rainbow. Mostly b/c my other yellow ink pad was dry as a bone, LOL! Now that I look at it ..I could have done more "rolling" in b/w the colors higher in the sunburst. I did it more in the middle and my photos covered it up. Def something to try again ...it was fun!

I loved this technique once I got a handle on it. I realized that my small inks wouldn't do and that I had to use a full sized ink pad. I also used pics from our fair this past August.
