Not sure where to put this

Not sure where to put this

Postby LauraC » Thu May 17, 2012 8:41 am

But I have a question on the stencil that was in the May kit. I love it. I have already used it but any tips on how to use the shapes in the internal stencil and not get the outline of the stencil itself in the layout. I used mist and the spray caught the edge.

I am thinking if I use paint, that won't be as big of an issue but those of you who use the stencil with mists, did you only use them on the edge of a layout to avoid the above problem?

Insight ? I am pretty new to stencils and mists on layouts in any type of advance use :)

If I was using it to mist, I would put separate pieces of scrap paper on the side to catch the mist and not get the edging. Does that make sense? Keep a few 12x12 pieces handy and use them over and over again as mist catchers.

I do the same as Diana. I use paper to mask the edges. Sometimes I don't though and I like how the edge shows up on the background. Remember that with misting, don't get too close to paper. Hold your hand back and mist lightly. Otherwise you can over soak the paper and it will bleed under your stencil. Less is more!

yes I use paper towels and maybe a hand haha so they get really colorful sometimes.

If I want the paper towels to stay put i place som cans or jars on them så my gesso jar is also very full of color :-D

Another thing you can do is take a 12 x 12 piece of paper and cut a hole right in the middle perfect for the size of the stencil. Then tape the stencil to the paper and leave it like that!! (Unless you want the edges to show). You still have to add some scrap papers to the edge of your 12x12 paper, too, though, so you dont get the edges of that.

Wow - some great responses! I love Audrey's idea! Denise, yep, I have figured out far away is much better than close. I have used the mists but only as a straight mist on a layout as a background. I'm just starting to experiment around with it a bit.

Thanks guys! I knew people here would know!

I do the same. I often take waste paper from my bin to do this.

I mask off the edges with scrap paper too.
Sometimes I like the look of the edges of the mask on the page.
It just depends on my mood.

Thanks ladies! I used the scrap pieces of paper idea and Audrey's suggestion of cutting a circle. It worked great. I posted a few pictures in my gallery - I love playing with paper
