Inspiration on Tuesday

Happy Tuesday all!

Tuesday on the Cocoa Daisy blog means sharing inspiration with you, and I’m so happy I chose the add on kit called Sculpture Park because it happens that almost every thing else is sold out! What a bummer to do all that work and have the inspiration piece sold out, but I lucked out. Sculpture Park is bursting with color and texture, and the Amy Tangerine alphabets are chipboard so you can alter them to any color you want! So much fun!

The thing that struck me about Sculpture Park were the Basic Grey die cut flowers. They are so colorful and happy, but kind of flat. Then I found this tutorial on a blog called Yellow Blackbird and thought they were a match made in heaven, don’t you think it would be fun to follow these same steps, but with the Konnichiwa flowers instead? I think the different colors all stacked up would be lovely. You’d have to add some sort of starch or glue to make them stiff, but otherwise it’s a similar process.

Chocolate cupcakes with flowers? Something tells me these beautiful floral cupcakes, featured on Project Wedding, give a glimpse at how striking the colorful BG flowers would look against dark brown cardstock. Don’t you agree?

This bouquet from Bollea placed against the brown woody background is gorgeous. I know in the April kit there was a piece of Echo Park paper called Vintage Fans that had  woodgrain on the B side. How perfect to mix and match kits!

Or how about making a headband with them, I could easily see this blue t-shirt headband from My Girlish Whims being turned into a very colorful version using the Basic Grey flowers.

So take these ideas and run with it, especially since the add on hasn’t sold out yet!

Dissecting Design

Hello all! I’m here to dissect a little design for you.

This layout is courtesy of May’s kit, Graffiti Bridge, which is now sold out! Let me walk you through a little bit of my process when creating this layout.

1. My first step is always to do a little misting. Here I used a dark mist just to grunge it up a little. After misting just a tad, I decided to draw my journaling lines. Little did I know that my black pen would literally disappear when I started to write, leaving me little choice but to cover it up! I decided to keep the lines and just type onto white paper and adhere it on top. I also liked how the piece of white lightened the page up a bit.

2. I wanted to add some shape to my layout, and decided to use this punch to create a sort of sideways “T” shape. I then filled the punched out bursts with things from the kit like the “create everyday” flag, a flag made out of folded and stapled ribbon, and the exclusive butterfly stamp, which brings us to step three!

3. Here, I wanted the butterfly to be in white. When I stamped (can you tell I’m a fan of trial and error here?), my ink wasn’t dark enough, so I just took some black paint and lightly fleshed it out. I liked that it ended up looking like a splotch.

4. For the border, I really wanted to use the scalloped stamp. I thought that it would dress up an otherwise plain grey piece of paper, and I loved the effect!

5. Because my stamp slipped while crafting (here I go again), I decided to add a little stitching around the page. For me, this more or less covers up my “mistake” as well as adds texture!

All in all, this layout was a labor of love! I had to go back and fix a few things, but I’m really happy at how it turned out. Hope this encourages you to save those “imperfect” layouts…you never know what they will turn into!

xoxo,
Stephanie

Stamping Sensation Friday with the Scallop Border Stamp

By:      comments (3)

Happy Friday everyone! I wanted to share with you a couple ways to use the scallop border stamp we introduced this month. Remember that your stamps can be used in either a bold way or a subtle way, I did both on this layout I created with the May kit:

For my bold way of using the stamp I stamped a border along the edge of the red and pink patterned paper and used some Zing Rouge embossing powder:

For a more subtle bit of texture and pattern I stamped the border on 2 different patterned papers and used clear embossing powder. I have the perfect scallop accent, and the patterned paper shows through the clear embossing powder (I keep the pattern and get a little shine too!):

With stamps you have so many great options! They really are a versatile tool.

Have a great weekend :)

Christine

May Gallery Spotting

By:      comments (2)

Well we had such an awesome Crop didn’t we Daisies? The gallery is filled to the brim with all kinds of projects, inspired by the classes and challenges. Here are just a few.

This one by Mette who created this beauty for Kim’s Challenge #18 Cloudy Skies.

Next we have Hannah who made this for Ronda’s challenge #15. Ronda gave us 6 graphically interesting album covers to use as inspiration. Hannah chose the Bruno Mars cover. I love her paint drips and the color choices she made, just beautiful.

I really thought this entry for my Challenge #12 Garden City was particularly cool. Gareth hand painted the flowers onto the brick paper just like real street art. The photo and journaling is really interesting for the challenge as well.

Emily gave a wonderful class called Patch Work Blankets. From that inspiration Marianne created this amazing piece of art.

Audrey used Jen’s challenge #10 Flying Kites to create this layout. The twirling twine and twirling little girl in the photos are full of movement. I love this.

There are so many more beautiful and creative layouts in the gallery. Please check them out for inspiration and here is a link to the full list of classes and challenges. You still have until Sunday May 6th to create and upload. Participating in the challenges is a great way to be inspired and get lots of scrapping done!  Thanks to everyone who is participating, your excitement is so wonderful!

Please Welcome May’s Guest Designer, Jill Sprott!

Jill lives in Oahu, Hawaii with her husband Rob and their daughter Zoe (I have a Zoey too!).  She is an English teacher by day and in her evenings she enjoys playing with words and pictures surrounded by patterned papers…sound familiar?  We are glad that she does what she does as we thoroughly enjoyed what she created for us this month.

I just adore how she arranged her journaling on this layout here titled Prom…

Check out her May gallery for Cocoa Daisy here and get to know her better by visiting her blog, Use Your Words.

Thank you Jill for being out guest designer this month!
