Since age seven I’ve been sticking my photos to paper and enjoying the process, and I don’t think that will ever change. My name is May Flaum, and I am a person who never expected to work in crafting, and at the same time couldn’t be happier that I am. My life is in Northern California with my husband and two quickly growing daughters. When we’re not talking about a trip to Disneyland or cooking together you might find me crafting about our life’s adventures in my craft space.

I have been an instructor for Big Picture Scrapbooking since 2007, and I’ve loved every minute of every class I’ve taught there. Currently I’m teaching a class about hybrid scrapbooking (registration closes March 3!) you can check out here- http://www.bigpicturescrapbooking.com/gohybrid.php. I also design for Scarlet Lime, write for www.scrapbookupdate.com, and I am the co-author of Paper + Pixels a book by Memory Makers and frequently update my blog www.mayflaum.wordpress.com with craft projects & adventures. If that doesn’t keep me busy enough I also do some freelance work and you can see me now and then in various scrapbook magazines and idea books too. I feel so blessed to work in this industry I love – and I was thrilled when Tricia asked me to be the March guest here at Cocoa Daisy.

Kits are a passion of mine, and I love all that Tricia packs into hers. The chipboard bits were fun to paint and ink, the ribbons are totally luscious, and the papers were each more yummy than the last. Usually I stick to layouts with kits, but I was inspired to try my hand at a small (5×7) canvas project to hang on the wall, a gift card holder from a Starbucks cup sleeve, and a card to send a friend. I cracked myself up with my “sew + lucky” card – can’t wait to send that one out.

I had so much fun with this kit – and I was definitely smiling the whole time. Thanks for checking out my projects –

February Guest Designer – Julie Fei-Fan Balzer

Hi! My name is Julie Fei-Fan Balzer and I live in New York City. I am obsessed with all things craft and art related! As far as my style, I tend to reach for the paint, ink, and sandpaper before the paper trimmer! I like art that looks handmade and invites a closer viewing.

I tend to experiment wildly with my supplies and see how I can stretch them, abuse them, and make them new again. At the same time I’m a sentimental fool and my journaling totally reflects my romantic nature. I have been published in many scrapbooking, quilting, and craft magazines in the U.S. and abroad. I am on the design teams for Prima, Kenner Road, Sultane, and the sketch challenge blog, Pencil Lines. I also regularly appear on Scrapbook Memories TV (PBS).

Mostly, I am on an ever evolving art journey! I’m delighted to be guest designing for Cocoa Daisy. I have long admired the kits and the design team is one of the most talented and artistically outrageous around!

As a third grader, Emily Pitts aspired to be a bulletin board designer for elementary school teachers. When she learned that such a career was not really plausible, she was crushed. Years later, when she discovered scrapbooking, she realized it might just be the fulfillment of her childhood dreams. Emily lives a mile high in beautiful Denver, Colorado, enjoying the 300 days of sunshine for which the Rocky Mountains are known. She is married to her perfect match, Kelly, who is patient very patient with her need to create and take photos. They have two near perfect children, Annie (15) and Ethan (almost 12). Together, they provide endless inspiration for Emily’s scrapbooking needs. Influenced by collage artists of late, Emily hopes her style would be described as handmade and fun, she likes to hand-cut things and use stitching in her designs. She’s been published in various scrapbook magazines worldwide, and has the pleasure of writing a regular column on trends for Scrapbook and Cards Today. She also happily designs for Studio Calico–a kit club and manufacturer, and the online inspirational collective, Write. Click. Scrapbook. So while bulletin boards are no longer her genre of choice, she has found her place in the world of design.

I love Emily’s style and the way she’s used the kit!  I love her “homemade” titles and I love her use of patterned paper!  Particularly the way she’s incorporated the Chatterbox filigree papers into her layouts.  And who wouldn’t fall in love with her beautiful tree wall art?  Thanks so much Emily!!!

Lisa Truesdell lives in Omaha, NE, in a midtown neighborhood filled with big trees and old houses. When her mother started scrapbooking, Lisa was surprised to see how far the hobby had come, and quickly fell in love with a craft that allowed her to experiment with color & patterns, words and photographs. She’s now been scrapbooking for 5 years and her pages are detailed and whimsical. She loves to mix and layer bits of patterned paper with lots of sewing. Lisa finds inspiration in quilt patterns and decor magazines, and loves to record the small moments in her family’s life that would otherwise be forgotten.

Lisa has been married to Matthew for 12 years and is a stay-at-home mom to their three boys – Alex, Ben and Sam. When she’s not making pages or chasing her boys, she is slowly teaching herself to use her sewing machine on fabric. She also subscribes to too many magazines and is useless from the moment she starts a new book until she finishes it.

Lisa was a Creating Keepsakes Honorable Mention winner in 2006, and has had her work published in BHG Scrapbooks Etc, Creating Keepsakes, Simple Scrapbooks, Scrapbook Trends and Cards Magazine. She is currently designs for Fiskars and Studio Calico.
