Dissecting Design Monday – Step by step
Today I’m going to show you step-by-step how I created my layout “boat ride”, using the July kit.
I knew I wanted to create some sort of grid design, so I started out by cutting some squares and rectangles out of cardstock, placing them on my background to find a design that I liked.
When I was happy with the design, I traced around the squares using a pencil…
…and then I cut the squares and rectangles out using my craft knife and a glass cutting mat.
As I went along, I decided to change the design slightly and this was what I ended up with.
I then added some machine stitching around some of the cut outs, to add some texture.
My next step was to choose the patterned papers and some of the embellishments.
Since my plan was to use two sheets of cardstock and to add some of the patterned papers to the background and to attach some to the top sheet, and then separate the two sheets slightly, using 3D-foam, I needed my top sheet to stay as flat as possible, even though I wanted to add some mist. Therefore I decided to cover my top sheet with gesso before misting.
When the gesso was dry, I added my mist.
I placed everything where I wanted it and then I added some of the pieces of patterned paper to my background cardstock.
I added some of the other pieces and the photo to my top cardstock. To secure the pieces, I added some more machine stitching. I then added the 3D foam and put the two sheets of cardstock together.
Here are some images of the result.
And the entire layout…
I hope you enjoyed this little step-by-step journey.
Have a lovely day!
