RESOLVE

So the kids FINALLY went back to school today and to me that means today is the day for getting back to a routine, FINALLY, and starting to really implement New Year’s Resolutions FINALLY… like being a better blogger.

In the shower this morning (where I seem to do all my best thinking and where I can’t write any of it down — do white boards work in showers?) I thought about what it means to make a resolution; what’s at the heart of it.  And it’s to resolve.  The definition of resolve is:  to determine or decide in purpose; to make ready in mind; to fix; to settle or to form a purpose; to make a decision; especially, to determine after reflection; as, to resolve on a better course of life.

I didn’t think I was a “one little word” person.   My attention spans tends to the short side and the thought of having one word define who I was for a year did not appeal.

Then I thought of the word “resolve.”  Anything that I want to do better in life, any changes I want to make to my health, my relationships, my work takes resolve.  Overall, I want to resolve to do better.  I’ve decided to give in and adopt one little word this year, one little gutsy word, resolve.

And in keeping with my resolve, I’ve made a few resolutions.

I resolve to be 5 minutes early instead of 5 minutes late.  I hate being late.  I hate that about myself and the unnecessary stress it causes.  So, from now on I will RESOLVE to be there before I need to be there.

We are most rushed getting out of the door in the morning.  To be 5 minutes early is going to require being better prepared in the morning  by prepping as much as possible the night before, getting up early and getting to bed before midnight.  That means not working so late so I’m too wound up to go to sleep earlier and in order for that to happen I’ll need to be more efficient and organized throughout the day.

So that one little resolution is actually going to take quite a lot of resolve to accomplish.   For the first day of my new year, I made lunches, prepped breakfast, had backpacks ready last night and I got up at 6 instead of 7 (ok, still didn’t make it to bed before 12 — curse you Jon Stewart for being so fun to watch!!).  and hopefully tonight will be an earlier night.  Baby steps to big change…

My other resolutions — work out more (already got 3 work outs in!), be a better blogger, no more ice cream at 11:00pm and to eat my “frog” first thing in the morning (get your worst task out of the way first thing in the morning to help you keep from procrastinating).

Yep, going to need quite a lot of resolve this year.

On a different note, I feel like I need a little house project.  And then I ran across this and knew I needed to!  I’ll let you know on January 25th what I decided to do!
